Send a message of support to striking BCGEU members at Gateway Casinos in the B.C. interior

Nearly 700 BCGEU members at four Gateway Casinos have been on strike since June 29.

Mediated talks recently broke off after Gateway refused to release financial information to back claims they cannot afford to pay higher wages.

Our members work at Playtime Casino in Kelowna, Lake City Casino in Vernon, and Cascades Casinos in Kamloops and Penticton. They work table games, as slot attendants, cashiers, in the count room, kitchen, security, guest services and maintenance.

They’re asking for living wages, better working conditions, and respect on the job.

We all know life in the Thompson-Okanagan is expensive. Gateway's most recent offer isn’t fair or reasonable. It would keep our members working in their casinos in the region earning well below wages casino workers are making on the coast for the same work. Our members simply cannot afford to live in the region on the wages the company is offering.

Spirits remain high on the picket lines, and we want to keep it that way. That’s why we’re seeking messages of support and solidarity. From you to them.

We have reason to be positive. On September 19, the B.C. Supreme Court denied Gateway's application to restrict picketing at the Penticton location. This is great news. The court upheld picketing as an exercise of free expression and workers’ rights.

Please sign the petition and add a message of support for BCGEU members at the four Gateway Casinos in the Thompson-Okanagan.

Hi i have worked in the casino industry sense 2004. Starting in alberta, i then moved over to bc. Im now back in alberta where i was just laid off from the caisno i worked at. I have worked in a few casinos in Alberta and worked at river rock in Richmond bc. This once was a great job. We were skilled employees that were paid accordinly. We were crupiers bringing entertainment to our guests. As the years passed and minimum wage keept increaseing, smaller casinos could not pay dealers with more experience and more games a higher wage. Now were thought of as chump change, a dime a dozen. Were basically government workers given the % that they take but we recieve no benafits or equal wages, no overtime pay, no respect on the job site. Not to mention the stress level of the job has sky rocketed. The economey was richer before and patrons had access money to spend. Now its harder to make a dollar and the same patrons need to get there gambling fix but dont have as much money. So now when they loose quickly, there more hostile with the dealing staff as they believe there the direct reason for loosing. This makes for a very stressfull work day let alone work week. I just wanted to let everyone know that your not just doing this for you and your casino but it shows lower level casino staff accross canada that we have a voice. Shows everyone we deserve to be treated better. I wish i was there with you holding a sign. Much love and support!! Keep fighting.

When I was a little girl my father worked as a longshoreman. Often the men would go on strike for better/safer working conditions, wages and to hold onto retirement deals and pensions. When they had to stay off work for months, holding out for what they deserved, my father and some of the other men would rent a cube van and buy groceries with what little money they could pool. Then they would drive to the homes of union members who were suffering the most and drop off food.

Stay the course! Look after your brothers and sisters. Solidarity wins the war on greed.

Good for you. Keep up the good fight. Casinos make millions and billions of dollars a year, the LEAST they could do is show its support for the people who provide their guests with a quality experience, by paying staff a living wage.

    Hey guys,

I believe that you do the right thing fighting for your rights to get appropriate wage for your hard work. The life is getting more and more expensive, but the employers don’t care if you can’t live on these wages. The only way to explain is to let them loose their profit. Our Union is a great support and I wish you to rich your goal.
