Send a message of support to striking BCGEU members at Gateway Casinos in the B.C. interior

Nearly 700 BCGEU members at four Gateway Casinos have been on strike since June 29.

Mediated talks recently broke off after Gateway refused to release financial information to back claims they cannot afford to pay higher wages.

Our members work at Playtime Casino in Kelowna, Lake City Casino in Vernon, and Cascades Casinos in Kamloops and Penticton. They work table games, as slot attendants, cashiers, in the count room, kitchen, security, guest services and maintenance.

They’re asking for living wages, better working conditions, and respect on the job.

We all know life in the Thompson-Okanagan is expensive. Gateway's most recent offer isn’t fair or reasonable. It would keep our members working in their casinos in the region earning well below wages casino workers are making on the coast for the same work. Our members simply cannot afford to live in the region on the wages the company is offering.

Spirits remain high on the picket lines, and we want to keep it that way. That’s why we’re seeking messages of support and solidarity. From you to them.

We have reason to be positive. On September 19, the B.C. Supreme Court denied Gateway's application to restrict picketing at the Penticton location. This is great news. The court upheld picketing as an exercise of free expression and workers’ rights.

Please sign the petition and add a message of support for BCGEU members at the four Gateway Casinos in the Thompson-Okanagan.

The workers deserve to make an equal wage to those doing the same work on the coast. NO JUSTIFICATION FOR ANYTHING LESS!

I grew up in the Penticton, and while I live on the coast now I’ve seen how expensive things have gotten in the Thompson/Okanagan.

I can only imagine that striking would be stressful, but you all absolutely deserve living wages, and it’s action like this that can spread and inspire our neighbours to hold out for a fair deal from their employers.

    Yours in solidarity,

    Ian McCartney

Rather than responding ‘in kind’ to any and all potential pressures or intimidation tactics, let them simply strengthen your resolve, Gateway GEU. Remain calm, respectful, focussed! You are worthy of that which is reasonable, and what you are asking for is reasonable – period.

Stay strong casino family! You are such an amazing group of activists! I enjoy my time walking with you where it is great to see such heart and spirit! BCGEU members are behind you and we believe a fair, living wage for all our members is essential. Your employer needs to come to the table with fair wages, better working conditions and respect for all its employees! #unionstrong

It’s crystal clear that Gateway is bargaining in bad faith. Your demands are more than reasonable. Hang in there.

The company has shown their hand by refusing to show their financial records. They know that they prove they can afford an appropriate wage increase for their workers to live on and still make an acceptable profit too. It’s sad when employers will squeeze every drop and at the expense of its workers so they can make more profits. You would think they would rather have happy and excited workers who make a living and work hard for them and also are making an acceptable amount of profits to make the whole process workable for them and you! Nope, they want that extra living expenses from you too for their profit margins….hang in there we are pulling for you more than you think!!!!

Stay strong in your pursuit of living wages, safety, and respect on the job! Employers will always say there is “no more money” while paying their shareholders, CEOs, lawyers, etc bonuses and conveniently refuse to release information to back this ridiculous claim. YOU are doing the work, YOU make the company their millions, YOU deserve to be treated with dignity and given the opportunity for more than barely escaping poverty while your bosses own Mercedes-Benz’s. You are an inspiration to not only the BCGEU workers, but other workers everywhere. Show these life-sucking companies that we will not stand their blatant disregard for human lives in pursuit of profit.

It’s pretty telling when a company refuses to divulge its finances – you can be sure they’re not doing right by their employees – keep up the fight for a fair livable wage and decent working conditions.!!!

Keep the faith. You are fighting for what is right for you right now, and for your brothers and sisters who follow. I doubt that the management of Gateway would accept what they are trying to make you accept. All the best.

We just went through the same scenario and make sure you stand firm together as a group otherwise no one would be in sympathy with you and stay out is the only way ( may be ) to get someone to listen to you. We didn’t get the best result for the first agreement but some progress was make and alot of back firing from the company since we went back to work :- for instance cutting number of working staffs ( at least 80 people didn’t get recall for the first couple of months) this is how they get back to you for striking. Anyway hang tight and you have all our support and sympathy.
