Send a message of support to striking BCGEU members at Gateway Casinos in the B.C. interior

Nearly 700 BCGEU members at four Gateway Casinos have been on strike since June 29.

Mediated talks recently broke off after Gateway refused to release financial information to back claims they cannot afford to pay higher wages.

Our members work at Playtime Casino in Kelowna, Lake City Casino in Vernon, and Cascades Casinos in Kamloops and Penticton. They work table games, as slot attendants, cashiers, in the count room, kitchen, security, guest services and maintenance.

They’re asking for living wages, better working conditions, and respect on the job.

We all know life in the Thompson-Okanagan is expensive. Gateway's most recent offer isn’t fair or reasonable. It would keep our members working in their casinos in the region earning well below wages casino workers are making on the coast for the same work. Our members simply cannot afford to live in the region on the wages the company is offering.

Spirits remain high on the picket lines, and we want to keep it that way. That’s why we’re seeking messages of support and solidarity. From you to them.

We have reason to be positive. On September 19, the B.C. Supreme Court denied Gateway's application to restrict picketing at the Penticton location. This is great news. The court upheld picketing as an exercise of free expression and workers’ rights.

Please sign the petition and add a message of support for BCGEU members at the four Gateway Casinos in the Thompson-Okanagan.

Hang in there. Our first contract with our employer First Credit Union took three long months but being on strike seem to bring the employees together more. Keep fighting for what you believe in.

Amazing how the casinos originally promised to invest in communities and human capital if they were allowed to establish themselves throughout the province but now advocate McJobs in the very places they’re thriving. Well the House doesn’t always win, this time the worker’s do! Keep it REAL. Keep it UNION!

You deserve a decent wage, and you can “bet” that the casinos can afford it. You will help future employees as well. Even though this is difficult on you and your families hang in there. We support you !

I wish the best for all people on strike and that they get their wages increased and get the respect they earned as casino jobs are very stressful at times.

We are all in together, we support you all. The company has no respect for employees and this is becoming their routine practice. What you need and we need is the union gets us all ready for unified action publically on TV. When Gov. needs our money (Tax) they take everything from our life and when we need their help they are not there.

Sisters. Brothers. I’ve been where you are. It’s hard to hold on month after month. Remember, you have been fighting for a living wage. You deserve it! Do what your conscience tells you. If it goes to arbitration, don’t they have to produce statements? I hope so. You have my full support. I wish I was coming up that way so I could walk with you.

To picketers acting appopriately: fantastic work keep showing the company you’re fine to stay out there as long as it take, continue acting respectfully towards the community, you deserve more and you shouldn’t settle for anything less.

To The picketers acting like children: stop blocking traffic and dictating your views upon others, act respectfully, convey your message (respectifully), and just generally chill out and let the negotiators do their job
