Send a message of support to striking BCGEU members at Gateway Casinos in the B.C. interior

Nearly 700 BCGEU members at four Gateway Casinos have been on strike since June 29.

Mediated talks recently broke off after Gateway refused to release financial information to back claims they cannot afford to pay higher wages.

Our members work at Playtime Casino in Kelowna, Lake City Casino in Vernon, and Cascades Casinos in Kamloops and Penticton. They work table games, as slot attendants, cashiers, in the count room, kitchen, security, guest services and maintenance.

They’re asking for living wages, better working conditions, and respect on the job.

We all know life in the Thompson-Okanagan is expensive. Gateway's most recent offer isn’t fair or reasonable. It would keep our members working in their casinos in the region earning well below wages casino workers are making on the coast for the same work. Our members simply cannot afford to live in the region on the wages the company is offering.

Spirits remain high on the picket lines, and we want to keep it that way. That’s why we’re seeking messages of support and solidarity. From you to them.

We have reason to be positive. On September 19, the B.C. Supreme Court denied Gateway's application to restrict picketing at the Penticton location. This is great news. The court upheld picketing as an exercise of free expression and workers’ rights.

Please sign the petition and add a message of support for BCGEU members at the four Gateway Casinos in the Thompson-Okanagan.

On behalf of the officers, staff, and the 390,000 members of the National Union, I would like to offer support and solidarity to all the BCGEU/NUPGE casino workers currently on strike at Gateway Casino’s 4 Okanagan work sites.

We salute your determination to achieve a decent contract, and we admire the courage you have shown in this struggle.

We also congratulate you on your big victory with the Supreme Court of British Columbia, which rejected an employer injunction that would have limited your right to picket at the Penticton location. The court’s ruling is great news for BCGEU casino workers and for all unions in Canada, because the court’s judgment upholds picketing as an exercise of free expression and workers’ rights.

    In solidarity,

    Larry Brown

To all the people I love and had the pleasure to work with let me tell you I stand with you 100%. Although I can’t be there to show my support I am here cheering you all on, hoping you all get paid what you are worth! If the casino can’t pay you what you are worth they don’t deserve you. Your personalities, customer service and wonderful attitudes are what keeps patrons coming back. To Gateway pay your workers what they are worth, it ins’t like it will cause you to go out of business!

if you or your fellow unionized co workers ever get called in to their offices to speak with management about a small infraction or grievance, always keep this attachment in mind so you know what you are dealing with…the GM at Playtime in Kelowna who wrote that memo was once upon a time a phone sex worker in her younger days…not that there is anything wrong with that as a job is a job and no one has to be saint or pious to be a manager etc…just remember she drank the companies kool-aid and these are the types of people the company chose to indoctrinate…always remember that very rude line in the post “REGARDLESS OF WHO IS ASKING

Remember, no matter what type of grievance comes up while employed at Gateway, especially those employed at Playtime Kelowna, always keep in mind this rude line “REGARDLESS OF WHO IS ASKING” and the type of people you are dealing with in management and just laugh…

    Stay strong…
